Writing Workshops and Seminar

The following workshops can be offered individually in time spans of 60, 75, and 90 minutes. Workshops can also be combined for half-day, full-day, and longer seminars.

  1. The Writing & Learning Connection

First students learn to write; then they write to learn. Writing and learning, like writing and reading, are reciprocal acts; they inform and sustain each other. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard prompts thinking, as writers consider what to say and how to develop their thinking in language effectively. As a form of inquiry, writing is a way to explore thinking. Our concern in this workshop will be with how writing can be used to enhance, extend, and deepen student understanding. In this interactive workshop, participants will experience and discuss specific strategies for making effective use of writing to enable and enlarge the learning of their students.

 

  1. Developing The Habit of Writing

Making writing a habit is essential for anyone hoping to producing and publishing body of work—blogs, presentations, proposals, articles, books both written and edited. Obstacles to  developing the habit of writing, however, are considerable. They include constraints of time and logistics, changing circumstances and increasing responsibilities, all of which compete with the work of writing. This workshop explores ways to meet these and other types of challenges, psychological and behavioral and more. Participants can expect to come away with specific strategies to develop the habit of writing.

 

  1. Effective Revision Strategies

Revision is an essential part of the writing process; without revision most writing, nearly all writing never reaches its full potential. We can’t revise of course, unless we have written something to work on and work with. A draft is the first essential element of writing. But a draft exists essentially to be revised. In revision lies writing’s salvation. This workshop focuses exclusively on revising—on the nature of revision, on strategies for revision. Participants can except to come away with specific approaches to revision from macro to micro—from conceptual revision to structural revision to stylistic revision: revising for idea, for organization, for stylistic elegance and grace.

 

  1. What is Good Academic Writing? 

To increase its chances of being accepted, a book proposal and the book that eventually emerges needs to be written well. Although academic writing across disciplines varies considerably, essential qualities of good writing cut across those disciplines (with the exception, of course, of highly technical topics for small specialist audiences). This session will focus on academic writing for a broad readership—for teachers and scholars both within and beyond the discipline base of your book. Participants can expect to come away with concrete suggestions for and examples of good, quality academic writing.
